The
District

Yandoit is situated 26 km south of Maldon, and is one of the most important heritage areas in the Central Highlands area of Victoria.

The Aboriginal Protectorate was established in 1841 by Edward Stone Parker to give the natives some protection from the early settlers. The discovery of gold in 1855 saw the population of Yandoit explode to around 5000 people, 27 hotels and numerous stores. By the 1930s, however the only gold that was left could only be gotten by sinking deep shafts up to 600 feet.

Swiss Italians settled in the area in the 1880s and their unique two storey buildings are now a tourist attraction in the area.

The
church

Holy Trinity was built in 1884 and was opened by the Venerable J.C. MacCullagh, Archdeacon of Sandhurst on 14th December.

In 1969 the area was devastated by a large bushfire and Holy Trinity reduced to a burnt out shell. As the brick walls were structurally sound, the decision was made to rebuild a new roof, replaster and refit the interior. The restoration was carried out by volunteers.

On December 10th 1972 the restored church was consecrated with 350 people present.
