Holy Trinity Maldon, 50 High Street, Maldon, 3463. PO Box 128 Maldon, 3463.
Holy Trinity Church, in High Street, Maldon celebrates its 150 th anniversary this year, 2011. A ragstone church, it was built and dedicated in 1861, eight years after gold was discovered in the area. The first Anglican service in Maldon was held under canvas in October 1853. Later, until the church was built, settlers worshipped in a brick and stone building erected in 1856 which served both as a school and church. (This was destroyed by fire; its successor is now the Penny School in Church Street ). Holy Trinity continues to provide ministry to local people and visitors, through worship, pastoral care, social activities and being the church in the community - on Sundays and weekdays. It is open every day and is the only church in Maldon with a resident minister. There are opportunities to share with other local Christians both informally and in the World Day of Prayer, the Shrove Tuesday service and pancake supper and Good Friday and Easter services. Holy Trinity is classified by the National Trust, and has a heritage-classified organ. A landmark in the town's past and present, it contains plaques, stained glass windows and other memorials to significant people in Maldon's history. Visitors come from all parts of Australia and many overseas countries. Its splendid acoustics make it a music space appreciated by local and visiting musicians and performers. Holy Trinity is an established venue for Maldon Folk Festival concerts and is used as part of the Goldfields Organ Festival. |
