Holy Trinity

"Enter the door.
As if the floor
Within were gold
And every wall
Of Jewels all
Of wealth untold
As if a Choir
In robes of fire
Were singing here
Nor shout, nor rush
But hush...
For God is here"

Inscription on door,
Holy Trinity

History The Church of the Holy Trinity was built and dedicated in 1861, approximately eight years after gold was first discovered in the area. Prior to it's completion, services were held in a brick and stone building erected in 1856 that served both as a school and church.

Holy Trinity is still serving it's original purpose in providing services to the residents of the Maldon Parish.

Today For well over a century, Christians have prayed in this church. It still impresses people as a place of prayer. Many visitors find it a blessed sanctuary in which to collect their thoughts, share a sense of peace and silence and to acknowledge that God is indeed in this church. The congregation can best be described as being mainly of mature age. Many came to Maldon from other areas, and have brought with them ideas from other parishes. Some from other denominations have been attracted by the warmth and friendliness that exists here.

We are ecumenically minded in seeking opportunuties to share with other Christians in World Day of Prayer, Good Friday services and on Shrove Tuesday when we join with the Roman Catholics in alternating Churches for a service, follwoed by a pancake supper. This is open to all.

We are proactive in the community, allowing concerts of the annual Folk Festival to be held in the church, which is an excellent acoustic space and use of the church grounds or judging of children's costumes for the Easter Fair, as we seek to introduce the wider community to the church building in non-threatening ways.

Weddings
Because this church is open nearly every day courting couples can’t help but be touched by the beauty of the church building and requests for weddings are not infrequent and most welcome by the rector.

Several weddings are held each year for non-residents of the district, and this provides a further opportunity to reach out to others.

Brides have been known to arrive accompanied by bagpipes and in horse drawn carriages and vintage cars.

Features of
note

Once through the door and into the interior, the first thing to catch the eye is the gentle light coming through the stained glass window above the altar.

This window was donated to Holy Trinity by the Byrant Family of  Barinhup. This looks spectacular in the morning when the sun is  shining through it

Walking up the aisle towards the Altar, you pass other windows on the  left and right. These feature a pictorial story of Christ. The  window on the right for example, shows Christ ascending to  Heaven while looking down on the apostles. The attention to  detail on the windows is impressive, you can just see the marks  in Christ's hands where he was nailed to the cross.

As you ascend the steps to the Altar, you pass the church  organ. Although Holy Trinity was classified by the National Trust  in 1977, it wasn't until 1989 that the organ received  Historical classification.

Turning around to leave, you can see another stained glass window above the balcony. This is the window that can be seen from outside under the bell tower.
